Parking for the Friday Umpire Meeting. There will be no parking on Greenough Blvd. on Friday evening. There is limited parking in two local lots—see Google map link for locations. A fee based parking lot is available across the street at Mt. Auburn Hospital (entrance on Mt. Auburn St.) See this map.

Parking on Saturday and Sunday. Park on Greenough Boulevard across Rt. 2 from CBC from dawn to dusk (adhere to this schedule strictly to avoid getting towed), upstream on the river side. DO NOT PARK ON GRASS. People assigned parking passes will receive them Friday night.

Car Pooling and Van Service for Umpires staying at La Quinta. If you need these services or have a car and can provide pooling, contact Cory Peterson to coordinate, email: cpxhedge@gmail.com for Van service and car pool reservations.

Race Day. All Umpires must be at their assigned stations 30 minutes before the start time of 8 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday.

Things to Bring. Please bring a clipboard, warm clothing, rain gear, water, sunscreen, and a thermos of coffee and a portable chair if desired. See: Equipment.

Friday 21 OCT 2011
4:00 PM, HOCR Umpires' Van leaves from La Quinta hotel to Umpire meeting. Please coordinates in advance. Contact Cory Peterson (tel: 978-697-2568, email: cpxhedge@gmail.com) if you need carpooling or plan to take the Umpires' Van, which seats 14.
5:00 PM–6:30 PM, Umpire Orientation & Training. BB&N Upper School (across from CBC); Community Room, at bldg end of long parking lot, by school entrance. See above for parking.
All Umpires and Umpire Committee and supporting staff—required attendance. This Orientation gives critical information about the weekend, plus a refresher on umpiring rules and tips. Light refreshments served.
6:30–7:00 PM, Registration at BB&N. Check in, pick up your HOCR jacket and service pin, and get Umpire station bags. You may leave after you register.
Transportation back to La Quinta: For those not in carpools and needing to return to the LQ directly after registration, we will have the 14-seat Umpires' Van. The first 14 to register and get to the van get seats, and there will be just one trip. Others please carpool. Contact Cory Peterson to coordinate (email: cpxhedge@gmail.com). Dinner is on your own.

5:00 AM, Continental breakfast at La Quinta.
6:10 AM, Umpires' Van leaves from La Quinta to CBC. Please carpool as much as possible.
6:30 AM, Lead Umpire Meeting upstairs on deck.
6:00 AM–1:00 PM, Umpire Registration. Check in and pick up Jacket and Umpire Materials at Umpire Registration (in CBC big room to right, just inside doors to porch). Coffee and muffins available at CBC, but your own big breakfast elsewhere is recommended.
7:10 AM, Umpires leave for their stations. Take HOCR Shuttle Bus to all stations except 12, 13 (walk), 14–15 and 3 (boat). Take Umpires' Van to stations 14–15. Umpires' Van will be available for transportation to stations.
7:30 AM, Umpire teams on their stations and conduct final run through on procedures. Umpire Central phone checks each station.
8:00 AM, First Race.
11:30 AM, PM shift umpires take HOCR Shuttle Bus (allow 20 min.) and arrive at station. Contact Bradway Widing 617-697-7280 for stations 1 and 2. Get briefed and overlap for 30 min. Bag lunch is provided. AM Umpires can leave only after PM people arrive. Call Norm Thetford 860-424-7393 if there are station-staffing problems.
Approx. 5:00 PM, Start of Last Race
Approx. 5:15–5:30 PM, Each Station completes its documentation for the last race. The Umpires' Van will pick up umpires after the races from all stations except 3 and 12–13. Someone on the Umpires' van will call each Lead Umpire beforehand to coordinate. If an HOCR shuttle bus is handy, take that. Note that the HOCR Shuttle Bus will not stop directly in front of each station but at the same regular nearby stops throughout the day.
Lead Umpires: drop off your radios and LU Bag at CBC and pick up your LU Bag for Sunday.
5:45 PM, Lead Umpire Meeting at CBC re: things that need attention for Sunday.
6:15 PM, Umpires' Van leaves for La Quinta.
6:15 PM, HOCR Shuttle Bus special run leaves from CBC to Ron's reception. (Please be on board before 6:15, as bus will leave promptly.) Carpool to 784 Memorial Drive (entrance behind building, on far side from river).
After Ron's Reception/Dinner, Umpires' Van will take one run to the LQ hotel.

6:15 AM–12:00 PM, Umpire Registration. If you did not register previously, come to CBC to get your jacket. All Lead Umps pick up Sunday radios.

Transportation

Logan Airport to and from the Hotel

Rooms have been reserved for out of town umpires at the La Quinta Inn in Somerville, Massachusetts, a short distance from the Cambridge Boat Club.

  • Hotel Shuttle—La Quinta runs an hourly shuttle service to and from Logan Airport. When you arrive at the airport, you can call the hotel at 617-625-5300 or use the direct phone line at the information desk in each terminal to let the hotel front desk know you are waiting for the shuttle, and let them know the letter name of your terminal. The shuttle is white with large graphics that spell out "LA QUINTA INN." To take the hotel shuttle from the hotel to Logan, call the front desk and leave your name and which of the scheduled hourly departures you need to reserve. Logan is 6.4 miles from La Quinta, and Yahoo sets the normal trip duration at 17 minutes.
  • Taxi—For those who may wish to travel by taxi, the La Quinta Inn is located at 23 Cummings St., Somerville, MA, near the Assembly Square Mall. Boston Taxi Fare Finder estimates the fare at approximately $30 including a 15% tip and $2.75 Logan Airport surcharge.
  • Sunday afternoon if people want some assistance getting to the airport the Umpires' Van can take you to Harvard Square to catch the MBTA subway to the airport. Contact Bradway Widing, Umpire Van Driver 617-697-7280.
  • Car Rental—The best option is to take the La Quinta shuttle from Logan to the Hotel and rent with the Enterprise Rent-a-Car two blocks from the hotel. Advance reservation by phone at least a week in advance is recommended. See details below under "Automobile Rental."

The Hotel to and from the Cambridge Boat Club

  • Most umpires staying at the hotel arrange for their own transportation or share rides between the hotel and the CBC. A single Umpires' Van with 14 available seats will be available as an additional option. Check the transportation schedule above for the times when the Umpires' Van will be available at the hotel and the CBC. HOCR Shuttle Buses—Transport to and from the stations and as needed during events (Stations 5–9 and 14–15)

After obtaining their assignments and equipment umpires at Stations 1–11 and will be transported to their respective stations by a special HOCR bus run. Stations 14–15 will take the regular HOCR Shuttle Bus. The Shuttle stop at CBC is located straight out the main door. Stations 10–13 can also walk from CBC. The buses run approximately every 15 minutes as shown below. We also have the Umpires' Van available for emergency service if the Shuttle buses are not sufficient. Umpires Umpires can call Bradway Widing 617-697-7280 ,Van driver, if for any reason emergency transport is needed during an event.

At the end of racing on both Saturday and Sunday, the Umpires' Van will pick up umpires.

HOCR Shuttle Buses will be circulating along Storrow and Memorial drives during the events, and are to be used to get to and from the stations.

Finish Line Expo FALS, parking lot 4—(Stations 14 and 15)
Riverside Boat Club, across Mem Drive from Micro-Center—(Stations 5 and 6, and to Ron's dinner)
Anderson Bridge, Storrow Dr off-ramp on Boston side—(Stations 6, 7, 8 and 9). Last stop at 4:30 PM.

The HOCR Shuttle Buses will not be providing transportation after 7 PM or from Ron's dinner. Transport after that hour should be personally arranged. As backup, the 14-seat Umpires' Van will make one trip from Ron's dinner directly back to the hotel.

Automobile Rental

  • Car Rental—Two blocks from the hotel there is an Enterprise Rent-A-Car location at 37 Mystic Ave.—Sullivan Square. Your best bet is to call 617-625-1766 to reserve a car at this location at least a week in advance of the regatta. Be sure to mention HOCR. An Enterprise rep can pick you up at the hotel and drive you to the office. You can leave the rental car at the Hotel on Sunday, and Enterprise will pick it up on Monday morning.

Parking at CBC

Parking is not available at the Cambridge Boat Club itself but you may park your vehicle along Greenough Boulevard along the river's edge until DUSK. Be certain to confirm this during the Friday umpires' meeting. The State Police have been known to change things.

  • FRI — Orientation/Registration (5:00&mdsah;6:30PM) will end after dusk (5:24pm)
  • SAT — Racing ends around dusk (last race starts 4:51, as of 10/11—may change). Create a reminder to move your car.
    • Lead Umps — Lead Ump Briefing at CBC at 5:45pm. Park on Mt. Auburn St. or in Mt. Auburn Hospital lot, then drive after the Briefing to the Umpire Reception/Dinner at 784 Memorial Drive, and park behind the building.
    • Non-lead — drive your car, hopefully full of fellow umps, to the Umpire Reception/Dinner at 784 Memorial Drive, and park behind the building.
  • SUN — Racing ends before dusk (last race starts 4:11, as of 10/11—may change).

Parking passes for stations 1-2, 7 and 7a and Marshalls will be issued during the Friday umpires' meeting

Breakfast

On your own. There will also be coffee and muffins at CBC at 6 AM Saturday and Sunday, but a hearty breakfast on your own is recommended.

Lunches

Bag Lunches are provided by HOCR for all Umpires and volunteers.

Snacks

Bottles water and energy bars will be delivered to umpires at their stations periodically during the day. Bring a thermos of coffee if desired.

Dinners Friday, Saturday and Sunday

Dinners are your responsibility. Please review the following list and make reservations as desired (recommended: make your reservations before you get to Boston).

For Umpires staying at the La Quinta:

A continental breakfast will be supplied by La Quinta at 5:00 AM Saturday and Sunday.

Lunches and snacks are provided at Stations.

Dinner is your responsibility. For dinner close to the hotel there is a decent restaurant directly across from the hotel.

Please remember to bring your cash with you.

    Driving Directions from CBC to Ron O'Connor's:
  1. take Memorial Drive downriver to Powerhouse Stretch (approx. 1 mile from CBC)
  2. turn left at Pleasant St. light, just past a large white brick building (the old Polaroid HQ)
  3. take second left into parking area behind the building, on the far side from the river
  4. enter building from parking area

If dining on your own in HARVARD SQUARE, transportation to La Quinta after your dinner is your responsibility. The best place to catch a taxi back to the hotel (23 Cummings St., Somerville) is the line of cabs that forms along Mass. Ave across from the Out of Town News kiosk, near the Harvard Coop. To take public transportation back to La Quinta using the MBTA Trip Planner, enter "Harvard Square" in the Start field and "23 Cummings St., Somerville MA" in the End field. (This will entail an 11-minute walk from the last stop to the hotel.)
