How to Dress for Cold Weather at the HOCR
November 2009. Updated September 2010
When Planning How To Dress For Cold Weather, Staying Dry Should Be A Top Priority.

When dressing for bad weather on the racecourse you want to insulate yourself; keep out moisture from rain or snow; wick or ventilate the moisture you generate and block the wind. No one fabric will do all these things, so you need to dress in layers and shed or add them as necessary. There are 4 layers as well as head, feet and hands to consider.
First Layer
- Comfortably light fabric that will wick sweat away from your body
- Avoid pure cotton, linen, or other similar materials (fabrics retain moisture and will chill you)
- Traditional thermal undergarments work well for the first layer- Available at most all the stores below
- An alternative to traditional thermals is silk. Silk is very warm and feels wonderful against bare skin.
